I met these tropical beauties in the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro. It is obviously a plant growing in wet conditions..
I would like to add it to the plant database..

Any idea anyone? Smiling

I'm thinking Colocasia but don't know which one, maybe Colocasia esculenta?: http://www.exoticrainforest.co...

Thanks Lin Smiling yes it does has some similarities, but no it isn't Colocasia esculenta, I met that plant too in Brazil, but it doesn't make that big trunk like stem....it might be a non-native to Brazil as it is in a botanical garden having collections of plants of all tropical regions on the planet..

It sure is a great ooking plant whatever it is! I didn't realize that was the trunk of the plant ... I thought it was a Colocasia growing on something else! Big Grin I sure hope someone comes along with an identification because I sure am curious as to it's identity too! I bet if you post that photo over on the Aroids forum: http://garden.org/forums/view/... Lari Ann and others will recognize it!

I'm hoping that this Plant ID Forum will eventually get more traffic but it seems pretty quite right now, some people may not be aware of it yet so your best bet for an exact ID might be from those over on the Aroids forum.

If not a Colocasia, perhaps it's a Xanthosoma of some sort?

That is a wonderful photo, Myriam. Alocasias will grow in standing water and are grown all over the Pacific as a food plant. Lari Ann Garner is an expert in the field of Aroids. You might take the question over to the Aroids Forum. I would imagine it can be identified over there.

Because the ears are upright, I'm thinking Alocasia macrorrhiza.

That's a good possibility, Alocasia macrorrhiza:

Upright Elephant Ear (Alocasia macrorrhizos)

http://www.google.com/search?q...

In the ATP database there's an (s) on the end of the name (macrorrhizas), I don't know which is correct.

Wikipedia and USDA Plants use macrorrhizos so that's what I used in the database...

Thanks Dave and Lin! The leaves sure do like Alocasia macrorhizos, in the Google link I even saw some pictures with trunks, the only thing that makes me doubt is that the trunks of the ones in the botanical garden were really very thick and I read that:
In tropical conditions it forms a of trunk 10 cm (4″) in diameter and about 2 m (6′) high. In culture, it is rarely more than 2 m (6′) high.

But for sure we are on the right track! Thanks! Smiling
I'll post it in the Aroids forum..
