I have some young bifurcatum's that seem to be growing very well, a inch a week on new growth. I was given some Miracle-Gro Orchid plant food mist. It is 0.02-0.02-0.02. Would this be safe to use on my Stag horns? These are indoors, 65-75*F and 55%H +/- 10%.

Do these normally have this kind of growth on young plants? All are mounted using sphagnum moss and a small amount of commercial Orchid mix They sure seem to use a lot of water, dry in 2 or 3 days after a good soak.

On this plant the two shield fronds and one antler frond closest to the lens is all new growth in the past month. since I mounted it to the board.

I use water soluble fertilizer applied with a hose-end applicator all the time, Steve. My stags get sprayed along with all my other 1000 tropical plants. So the short answer, at least in my experience, is that the foliar fertilizer is perfectly OK.

Yes, young stags do best when kept constantly moist (not soggy wet though) and they do grow pretty rapidly. I generally have to water my mounted stags every single day, spring and summer, at least those young ones. When the stag gets large and has multiple basal fronds forming a thick layer of "spongy" material, watering will be much less.

My Common Staghorn Fern (Platycerium bifurcatum) plants stay outside in and on trees but I've never fertilized them; they get all their nutrients from stuff that falls out of the trees. Listen to drdawg/Ken, he's a very knowledgeable grower; he grows lots of stags ... and orchids ... and ficus and ....

and, he grows them all quite well! Thumbs up

I tip my hat to you.

Some folks might question that "knowledgeable" statement, Lin. But I do grow a lot of stuff. Thanks for the kind words.

Ken, I don't know why anyone would question my statement. I've purchased a few of your orchids and I know that you are a very knowledgeable grower ... every plant I've received from your store arrived very happy and healthy!

Again, thanks for the support, Lin. I wish I had a store. Everything I do and everything I have is at my house. Sighing!
