Has anyone tried to grow ginger outside of its zone similar to potato? Just grow it for the summer, harvest the whole thing in the fall, store some of the rhizome like a seed potato and replant in the spring again?

I grow edible ginger year-round. I plant the pieces in a big pot but bring it in when it starts getting cold. Have never grown it in the ground.

Awesome! What kind of container do you use? Do you just bring it in over winter?

Its a ornamental ginger as far as I know, think this spring I will try growing some edible ginger. Fun just to try some tropicals and overwinter them.

@Crawgarden , I'm a little late to this party, but how do you overwinter the gingers in your basement? Do you just cut them back and let them dry out until spring? TIA !

Yes, I cut them back, overwinter them in the basement...temp 45-60. Just an occasional drink of water 1/2 cup every 4-6 weeks
