I have been slowly working on adding plants to create my plant list. I have kept the settings on "private."

I wish there was an option to share my list with a couple close friends that live nearby without sharing my list with everyone across the world.

Would it be difficult to add an area to share the plant list with members by adding their user names, similar to adding names to a tree-mail?

Thanks!

It would be a very lengthy job to add that functionality into the list system. Maybe one day I will but not soon.

You can always go to your list, highlight the link and then past it into tree mails to those you want to see it.

Thanks, Dave. If it's a lengthy thing, probably not enough people would use it to be worth doing.

Never know unless you ask!

Lin, if the list is "private" how would they see it, even with the link?

D'Oh! I don't even know if my list is public or private, I went to my profile page but couldn't figure out if anyone else sees it or not ... but I don't really use it anyway. Green Grin!

Lin, your list appears to be public. Smiling

LOL, I have no clue how to mark it private.

Oh, Lin, you can only make the whole list private by going in and marking each category as private. That's the only way I know. Was that something you wanted to do?

You cannot make a list private.
You can only make categories private, that is my understanding.
I wish I could make it my list private also.

Why? Just curious. I have no 'secret' information in my plant list, nor do I think anyone else is much interested in it. Am I missing something?

There are reasons to make your list private.

For one example, if people know who you are in real life, you may not want them to know that you have a new $300 daylily in your front bed!

LOL, my list is not very long because I never seem to get around to updating it, and I don't have any expensive plants so it doesn't need to be private. Green Grin!

I can't even fathom a $300 daylily. I suppose they do exist, but... really??

I know I'm missing something, but I don’t quite understand why one would go though the long process of making lists and categories in a public arena and not want to trade/share.

Why would anyone in the public, give a plug nickel what plants I own?

Yeah, I don't get it either. Hence my curiosity - why do those of you who maintain private plant lists do so?

Because it is an excellent resource to help catalogue, track, and record information about our plants.

I like to use the list for my own reference but I don't want others to contact me frequently asking for plants. By others I mean new members or members I am not that familiar with. I don't mind trading or selling/buying from the site, but I do sometimes get requests from people I think just signed up to ask members for free plants! There might be extended periods of time my garden may be in renovation or my list is needing updated and I'd like to set it on private for a few weeks while I update or work on it.

Horntoad, I agree with you, love the feature. Frilly, I've never had anyone contact me to ask for plants, maybe mine are just too humdrum? Who would have the time to go through a bunch of plant lists hoping to snag a freebie? Seems rather unlikely, but I could be wrong. Interesting though, and I hope other 'privateers' chime in with their reasons. As I said at the get-to, I'm just curious.

When I do put something in my list, am I able to use my own photos, or do they automatically upload pictures already here. I know I am missing something. But cannot figure out how to get my pic in with my description of my plant. I see upload an image here, and I can do that. I don't see the option on the plant list page of mine.

That is something that has been in the talks for a while, but unfortunately is not available at this time. Everything is tied to the database. Normally your list will automatically show the database image that has the most thumbs ups. But if you upload one of your own photos to the database, then the system will default to your image and show that in your list.
