Hello.

Going to try a hybrid refrigerator/winter sowing stratification process in the fall/winter. In the past, I've used zip lock bags w/a little potting soil. Wondering...can you use just plain old sand? Or does something else work better? I've had ok success...though sometimes seeds grow mould and rot so I was looking for an alternative...any suggestions? I'm sowing seeds like Collinsonia canadensis, Elephantopus carolinianus etc...some of the seeds will be tiny.

Rather than soil I would suggest a sterile medium. I only use Vermiculite but there are other media that can be used.

greene is right sterile medium is your best option but you can always bake some sand at 350 in the oven to sterilize it
