Hi,

I live in Napa Ca and am putting in a new lawn in my front yard. It is a fairly small yard and I would like to put a 5' in diameter brick planter with a tree in the middle. I want a pretty tree with flowers that doesn't get more than 6-8' tall max. It is kind of under the umbrella of a huge jap maple tree about 15-20' away from it. It will get full sun half half the day and shade the rest of the day.

The nursery says the Rose of Sharon would be good but your site says this tree might get up to 12' tall.

What is a good tree for me?

Rose of Sharon would be good and they take well to pruning. The Lil Kim series of Rose of Sharon only get about 5 feet tall.

One of the small growing Crepe Myrtles would also work. Something that grows incredibly slowly like Colorado Spruce cultivator Baby Blue Eyes - doesn't bloom but stays green (blue) all winter.

I have a little weeping pea tree that I really like so far.
