Hello, plant experts! I recently went on a trip to Branchland, Lincoln County, West Virginia to visit Grandma and celebrate her 87th birthday. Hurray! While I'm there, I always visit a lot of cemeteries to continue my genealogy work. Dad and I were on a path walking from one cemetery to another when I saw a Tiger Swallowtail. They're super common in WV because Tulip Poplar is a host plant and that stuff grows everywhere. But what got me curious was the shrub or small tree it was nectaring on. Anytime a butterfly is that interested in something, I need to know what it is! Thanks in advance!

I agree, it sure appears to be the lovely Sourwood (Oxydendrum arboreum)

Now, I'm going to have to tease Dad! He was with me and didn't know. And he made a joke on vacation about using sourwood sticks when you cook your groundhog. My great-grandmother really did that, by the way. Thanks you two!
