Costco!!! So the planner in me was napping when I stumbled upon the large racks of bags of bulbs (from http://www.bulbs-to-blooms.com... ) at Costco. A few moments of frenzied gardening passion and I went home with:

1 bag 0f 100 crocus 'spring beauty',


1 bag 0f 60 iris 'harmony',


1 bag 0f 100 anemone 'St. Brigid' mix (purple, lavender, pink, white, red),

1 bag 0f 100 anemone mix of 'The Admiral' & 'Lord Lieutenant',

1 bag 0f 100 anemone mix of 'The Governor' & 'Mount Everest',

1 bag 0f 100 anemone mix of 'Sylphide' & 'Mr. Fokker',


1 bag 0f 28 hyacinth 'Shades of Blue',

1 bag 0f 28 hyacinth "fierce mix" (white, pink, lavender, purple, light red),

1 bag 0f 28 hyacinth mix of 'Pink Pearl' & 'Blue Star',


1 bag 0f 50 tulip mix of 'Carnaval De Nice' & 'Midnight Magic', &


2 bags 0f 100 Muscari latifolium

As far as I'm concerned that is either a colossal lapse of reason or a cry for help...maybe BOTH. So much for my big bulb plan ning session for the fall!

Any words of wisdom/caution regarding any of these? Suggestions for companions if these varieties seem lonely?

Gosh I wish I had the room to plant all those! You've got some lovely varieties there. I saw Anemone "Mount Everest" in a planter at RHS Harlow Carr and absolutely loved it.

I already answered about anemones in the other thread and I think that one is the only one that could be a bit problematic.

I'd suggest that the iris should be planted soon as they could be a bit susceptible to drying out, at least this have been my experience with some cultivars. They also will need regular dividing as iris 'Harmony' tend to split up into many small bulbs. A really lovely bulb, but might need some extra care to have reliably bloom in the following years. If you like this type of iris, also look at 'Katharine Hodgkin as it tend to split more into flowering size bulbs so wont need as frequent replanting:


The tulips on the other hand like to be planted late. The ideal time is when the soil cools down to around 10℃/ 50℉. Late planting can help with fungal problems and rots. They like a dry summer rest so depending on climate they might benefit from annual digging in summer once the foliage have completely dried and the skin on the bulbs have turned brown. A few bulb baskets can make this a considerably easier task.

I have found that squirrels will dig up and eat the crocus. Often, they will just take one bite from each - enough to destroy them but leave the evidence. So, if you have squirrels you might want to do something to protect the crocus.

Well Urban wild, at least you acknowledge that you need help. You will be busy planting all of your goodies! My suggestions are as follows: a.) seek counciling
b.) If you have problems with squirrels consider adding a few Moth ball flakes when planting your bulbs - the squirrels here only seem to bother the bulbs at time of planting and for what ever reason they do not dig up the new ones when I have added moth ball flakes in the past. c.) Not sure what your design objectives are with your new stash, but consider planting a bulb of two of the muscari adjacent to your other bulbs - the benefit of this is that the muscari generates new foliage in the summer and fall which helps you identify where you have bulbs already planted come next fall - when you relapse, and are back in a similar situation with more new bulbs. Funny! I have a new hero...

Phew!!! As of 2 days ago, we finally got it all planted. Along the way, I bought other interesting varieties...and when finally we thought we were finished, Lowes had theirs for 75% off!!! Hundreds more bulb orphans adopted. They had been frozen and VERY dry, but hopefully there was enough life in them to succeed. I did not use any screening or covers. A month or so after planting anemones, I saw where there were a coupke of fresh holes...then saw the culprit in the act...gray squirrel. We do have raccoons and opossums but they don't seem interested. Luckily, no further digging is in evidence. But the Crocus just went in...we'll see.

In thus latest planting, while digging I hit a number if previously planted bulbs. SIGH...

I may have been inclined to buy a carload of sniwdrops at 75% off. We never saw any. That too may be lucky!!!

We are already seeing 1-2 inch anemone shoots.

Urban you will ADORE your anemones. They are a low growing plant, but you have to get closer to feel and touch their satin petals. The feathery foliage is a plus too.

I just read the above article now, boy that fella had the sickness bad!
