Hey all,
I was just wondering, is it common for offsets to grow from the blooming stalk of a semp?
How often have you seen it?
Will they survive if I cut them off and plant them? (or what is the best strategy for survival?)

I've seen something similar in other plants (daylilies mainly), but I've never seen this in semps.
Then again I've only been growing them for a few years... Sticking tongue out

Thanks for any info about your experiences!

Here are some pics that illustrate what I am talking about:

Hi J.C.
I have had that a few times. Seems like most of them ended up blooming. If I remember correctly a couple of them did end up living to become normal rosettes. I detached them and gave them special attention.

I came across this yesterday on Topaz. There are three of four of them in a ring around the base of the bloom stem but between leaves. I suppose they will bloom too? We'll see...

Yes, I can see the bloom on one offset already forming.

I have a silly noid that has also put out a bunch of chicks and a few blooms. Shrug!
The blooms appear to be finished. I'm not sure what she's going to do next! Hilarious!

here's a Noid Semp head having been lopped twice and now barely existing with bloom head, flowers and offsets hanging on; I'm just waiting for the chicks to mature a little longer and going to take them off before long.

It is a noid that I found most interesting in that it had long fuzzy red-green leaves in Spring. I think the plant came from Patty and might at one time had some ID but she did have some beautiful noids that she offered to us before she made the big move. I'm hoping to see that interesting Noid again thru the offsets maturing.

Here's another offset next to a bloom that popped up later
on previously cut bloomstalk:

I'm anxious to get this and other two offsets going into their own pot. They are offsets to a noid that I still found interesting enough to save!

It happened to my Topaz. I posted a photo a while back and Lynn thought they were going to bloom but they did not. They are true offsets and if it ever stops raining during daylight I will get a photo.

Ok here are the Topaz stem chicklets; side(ish) view:
Thumb of 2016-10-15/pardalinum/defb79

Looking straight down, you can see where I cut the stem off:
Thumb of 2016-10-15/pardalinum/158fc1

There must be 9 or 10 new chicks on the stem!
