Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Wonder of It All')

One of the best daylilies in my garden (with nearly 700 cultivars)! I bought it many years ago as a double fan. Within three years it had clumped up to over a dozen blooming fans that reliably instant rebloom here. First flowers are at least six inches. Subsequent flowers averge about 5.5". Scapes are strong enough to hold upright two of these flowers, but three will make it bend. Flowers are of heavy substance---so they weigh a lot. Flowers sometimes hang up and need some help. Some people report that it happens all the time---but not here. I would say they will hang about 20% of the time. The problem with the hangs is that it is not easy to get them to open without some damage to the flower. It is best to wait till late morning to manipulate them to open. By then the flower will be at it's most open stage so it will take less to get it to spring open. WOIA will set pods fairly easily if done early in the morning. You can easily set pollen on even the hung ones as the stigma shows out from the petals.

I have only had this plant for 2 years and so far it is very slow to get settled in. I only had 2 scapes this summer with only about 6 bud count. I sure hope it does better because it does have such a lovely bloom.

The person mine was purchased from sent me a big clump as it was a fast increaser for them. I have had it a number of years it does hang up on some of the blooms when they are opening so I just give them a bit of help, have not kept a bud count record. I agree that it is indeed a lovely bloom.

@sScape did such a great job describing WOIA that there is not much to add.

Hangs up about 1/3 of the time here, but when it does open without hanging it is such a beautiful heavy substance bloom. Set pods easily. Med-fast increaser.

I have started to downsize, but this is one that will stay.

with what Greg and Lisa said about WOIA. It is also a fast increaser for me. The only negative thing is the thick petals edges get stuck and flowers can't open properly sometimes.

The description of this bloom says" very pale lavender with yellow gold edge above green throat", of all the photos in the database I don't see anything that looks the least bit lavender. What's up with that?

This has to be one of my favorite daylilies! I got it through Slightly Different Nursery 4 years ago. In my zone 5 garden, I can't believe how many stalks come up and how many blooms I get per stalk. Yes, sometimes the blooms need a little help opening, but the ruffling and substance on this plant is noteworthy. These traits need to be passed on, and looking at the database, others have had the same idea as it has many registered offspring. In cooloe weather, I get a lavender/peach casting tone on it. No matter what the weather, it performs well, and we have all sorts of different kinds of weather extremes here. It has rebloomed all but the year I planted it, which was in the fall. Tolerates dry conditions as well as ample moisture. Carr had it right when he thought to introduce this one. Truly a favorite. Thanks for making this one of the Daylilies of the Day.

I received 2 fans of this one last fall in a trade. By spring it had increased to 3 fans and I now have 4 fans. Nice substance to the blooms. Mine did all hang up except a couple. I only had 2 scapes. I do not recall the bud count. I had no rebloom here. I look forward to what it will do next year. :thumbsup:

This was the 2nd blooming year in my garden. It did well last year, exceptional this year. It occasionally had blooms hang up, the first 3 or 4 did a bit this year, but I don't think I had any hang up after that. It has probably doubled in size this year from last year, but I started out with 4 or 5 fans. It rebloomed last year, but hasn't this year, although, come to think of it, could have been instant rebloom, it had a LOT of scapes. Very nice in a year when several very well established daylilies did not bloom at all, including a couple of really dependable ones like Bill Norris

I've had this growing in a pot for several years. I very much have mixed feelings about it.

When the blooms open, they open flat and the bloom is nice, although it is a bit smaller than I like. However, it often does not open well (flat) here. Part of that may be due to letting the pot get too dry - it seems to need a lot of moisture to open well. Part of that may (or may not) be our climate (cool nights, arid climate).

It has never rebloomed for me. Supposedly it is rust resistant, but the last two seasons it has had a fair amount of rust, enough so that I am thinking of getting rid of it. (The rust, combined with the opening issues, and bloom size, and lack of rebloom don't add up to a great cultivar, at least imho.) On the other hand, I am trying some crosses with it, so who knows... I may keep it around a little while longer.

Larry, I have to say that I don't see much (if any) lavender in it. I have what I consider to be a "very pale lavender" seedling (not out of WOIA), and it has a lot more lavender than WOIA does. In my book, WOIA is a "near white", period.
