Good tip. I've used it in the past.
Guess you'd want to be sure to not use the "peanuts" make of cornstarch... They melt when in contact with water.

As Susie said, be sure they are not the biodegradeable kind. I filled half a large container with packing peanuts for a topiary, woke up the next morning to a sunken topiary... tricky re-planting, but successful!

But yes, a GREAT tip for recycling the regular packing peanuts!

And not just the peanuts, I also break up the big chunks that are used for packing electronics and use those in a similar fashion.

Don't have access to peanuts but egg cartons and mushroom boxes work.

Maybe this is where I got this idea from lol....anyway I used it about two days ago and love that the pots are lighter and easier to move.

I hope you put a barrier between the peanuts and the soil?
If not when you replace soil or dump pots it takes a very long time to sort peanuts from soil (from experience)
I just use weed barrier It lets water drain through .

I do something similar but use empty drink cans, with the holes facing downward, covered with a layer of landscape fabric.
On extra large pots I use two layers of cans.
