A little dirt never hurt anyone. But only in a generally hygenic culture.

I can attest to the benefits of Mycorrhizal Fungi in the root zone of my plants. I brought in wood chips. It takes roughly 18 months to decompose enough in which to plant. Oh my, the Mycorrhizal Fungi was everywhere. I forgot to fertilize the one watermelon that I planted, but got 4 melons. The one barrel gourd seed has developed well over a doze and I can see a dozen more baby gourds sprouting. I credit the microbes. You can buy it in powdered form or even tablets. But, they do help your plants by growing more roots.

I'm currently reading an amazing book called "I contain multitudes: the microbes within us and a grander view of life" by Ed Yong and I don't think we truly appreciate what the microbe world does for us and how it ties us all together! Great article, thank you for sharing! Group hug

Some nutritionists from Yale went on a field trip to China (decades ago, when that was more of an adventure). They were interested in "traditional" diets among farmers, because the variety of foods didn't seem likely to provide all the vitamins they were sure were needed.

Well, the diet of those farmers WAS as limited as the Yaleies had heard, and by all their scientific knowledge, SHOULD have given them all nutritional deficiency diseases. But they were quite healthy.

So the scientists went back to new Haven scratching their heads. They paid a bunch of undergrads to eat a test diet "exactly identical" to what the Chinese farmers ate. The kids got sick right away, exactly as predicted.

They fiddled around until they figured it out.

Their cooks were CLEANING all the vegetables very thoroughly before cooking them or serving them raw.

The farmers were only cleaning them FAIRLY well.

The small number of soil microbes in the small amount of soil remaining on the vegetables were providing the missing vitamins.

Take away the dirt, take away the vitamins.

One of my bosses, is a loud and proud germaphobe. She cannot drink our coffee, we may not clean the pot enough for her.
In the years I have worked around her and heard her lecture any and all, she has yet to figure out every one has noticed, she seems to be the unhealthiest person in the office. So yes, resistance is a real thing!!

Dr. Ingham gave me the words to use when thinking about my addiction to "making good dirt" and more info to become more successful at it. I'd been composting for a while when I encountered this vid but it was like a light coming on.
