Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Elegant Candy')

'Elegant Candy' was a good one for me in zone 7A! I got it on 4/1, and the first scape appeared 6/16 with the bloom following on 7/3. The bloom size was as predicted, about 4.25 inches, but the height didn't match the predicted 25". Because it was a teensy thing when it came on 4/1, that didn't surprise me. I bet it will make that next year. It was just one fan, and I had only 6 blooms, but that wasn't a surprise either. I think 'Elegant Candy' will be an excellent bloomer next year.

Elegant Candy blooms really well every year for me, very pretty in the garden with lots of blooms at one time.

Elegant Candy is an excellent performer for me in my zone 5 garden. Blooms are consistent and it is pod and pollen fertile. One of the few "Candy" series that I continue to grow.

I planted Elegant Candy about 7 years ago. It is a dormant so I wasn't sure how it would do here in north Florida, but it seems to have made it so far. It grew with nice foliage, had a light assortment of blooms taller than 18" but not as tall as 25" and rebloomed for me. It lived up to its name and is an elegant plant. In my soil (sand, clay, pine chips and compost), the color was a light pink (not peach) with a light red eye. It hasn't increased much but it was planted in light shade (that eventually turned into dense shade) from ~ 11am to 4pm, so it's hard to blame that on the plant. I dug up my shaded daylilies this spring and replanted them in a compost enriched soil and will learn a lot next spring on how they like the new place. Right now they are getting high shade until about 9:30am and high shade from a neighboring forested area from about 5pm on. As we get into winter, the shade will decrease since most of the surrounding woods are deciduous.

Unfortunately, this daylily just did not do well for me. The first 2 years I had it were its best years. After that, it seemed to bloom less and less each year until I sent it on its way. Maybe I should have moved it to a new location to try before I cleared it out of my garden.

Very consistent pretty blooms, it has performed well here. Planted three fans in summer of 2014, and has clumped up well.

I have Elegant Candy for quite awhile it has always performed very well. True to it's AHS description.

Elegant Candy is one of those beautiful daylilies that I just am not sure about. It bloomed great the first year, but each year has done less and less. It is not in a prime real estate area, so a move is in order for it to improve. Almost all of my daylilies that are pinks or peachy apricots just bloom a very pale peach. Whether it is a sun, heat, or soil issue. Elegant Candy does hold its color here.

I planted 2 fans last summer but they didn't bloom for me this year. There are now 4 fans and I hope to see some blooms next season

Along with Awesome Candy, Elegant Candy is among the best performing of the Candy series here.

Ten years ago I bought Elegant Candy from Floral and Hardy in Ontario, and have enjoyed her beauty and especially her fragrance ever since. She gives a solid month of bloom in July, and a bit into August as well. I also like the variety of colours she shows.



I have not put these images into the Database, because there are already 52 photos there, showing these colours and more. She has been well used as a parent plant to 60 registered child plants. A worthy cultivar to grow. (Especially for the scent, if you like Very Fragrant varieties.)

Elegant Candy has done quite well here in Ky, multiplies and blooms well. It has rebloomed, although not every year, and the colors seem to hold up quite well in the sun. Quite a nice plant.

I don't have it but I once saw it in a garden close by and still Zone 4 so it is hardy here. The only criticism I could make of it there was that the bud count was too high! They hadn't deadheaded and so it had a mass of spent blooms crowded in with the fresh ones.

I had never given any thought to a daylily having to high of a bud count, but I can see that if the daylily has just a mass of slimy blooms clinging to the plant it would appear to have too many. I do like plants that have blooms that as they fade tend to dry up and just fall off. I do have a few that require, almost demand, to be deadheaded because of the large mass of thick slimy blooms they leave behind. Those type blooms stain my hands with their bleeding colors. It is amazing just how messey and how much moisture some daylily blooms retain while others are just a dry paper like material that just falls away.

Last year Elegant Candy had an exceptional bloom year, and I completely get the thought that it can have too many blooms. Those lingering slushies look nasty, and prevent new blooms from opening well. I still enjoyed EC, it bloomed over 2 months continuously.

I have grown Elegant Candy in MI for a few years and it has clumped nicely. Undivided since planting there are at least 20 fans. 2021 FFO was 7/7 which is early mid-season on site. about 20 buds/scape typically 3 branches, 14 scapes in 2021 and put on a great show. Pod/Pollen fertile.
In TX on the other hand, it is about to die out...moles and tree roots are not helping.

I planted EC on Upper Daylily Hill in the Spring of 2019. I never saw a bloom, I think it just didn't take.
