Hello!
Quite a while ago, probably about a year, I started growing celery from a left over celery stump. Now the plant is about a foot tall with very thin, soft stalks. It seemed to have reached a plateau and isn't getting much bigger. I moved it to a bigger pot about a month ago but it didn't seem to help. I've read that growing celery from a stump yields skinny stalks but I'm just wondering if there's anything I can do to get it to grow a little bigger and firm up the stalks. Also, if it does get bigger, how do I go about removing some of the stalks without killing the plant. See the picture, I held a pen up next to it for a thickness reference.

I do not know how to get the stalks to grow thicker , but if you were wanting to use some in soups or diced into salads , just cut some of the outer stalks near the base and use away . Just do not cut more than 1/3-1/2 of the plant at a time and give it time to recover. You will mostly find the celery you have grown to be a much stronger flavor than the store bought original . It is due to the different growing conditions.

My celery sizes up the stalks in cooler weather, but it really likes lots of water. How have you been fertilizing it?

Where are you located? (please put this into your profile for future reference?) Is your weather cooling off yet or still hot? Dry or humid? All these things will affect how your celery grows.

Looks like the celery is inside as a houseplant so where doesn't really mater in this case.

Till i saw it indoors. I was gonna say. For longer stems to put a cardboard 1/2 gal milk carton over it. (open at both ends of course)😄

The NGA learning library has information about celery (but in this item they assume it will be grown out of doors so adjust the information accordingly). Many people prefer the taste of celery that has been blanched - that is not a cooking term in this instance, but a gardening term - exclude sunlight to make the stalks more tender, less bitter, a better flavor.

Here is an off-site link where they suggest using newspaper to blanch the celery...I think Philipwonel had a good idea with the milk carton cut off both top and bottom - much stronger than newspaper.
