I thought this would be interesting to see where the hybridizing really started. Looks like 2013 was a banner year for hybridizers introducing their seedlings. And it looks like the middle 1930's was when either there was more gardeners doing hybridizing or a few gardeners hybridizing and introducing a lot more seedlings.

Very interesting, Becky! Does the lower number in 2016 just mean 'so far this year'? I'm sure there is a deadline for each years' intros, but am clueless as to when that is.

Becky, where did you get the numbers you listed? If you got them from the NGA database it may not have been updated from a previous update to the AHS database.The number of registrations for 2016 changes as registrations continue to be recorded and are updated to the AHS database, it's important to look at the last updated date which currently is 2016-08-09. When I do a search of the AHS database for 2016 I get 1601 daylilies.


The cut off for each years registrations is Nov. 1st. This means for inclusion in the 2016 registration checklist (printed in the spring of 2017) the 2016 registration window is open Nov. 1, 2015 to Oct. 31, 2016. Daylilies registered on and after Nov. 1, 2016 to Oct. 31, 2017 will be listed as 2017 registrations.

Thanks, Char. I figure that the registration list for this year was incomplete. I actually did a Plant Database check using the characteristic of registration year. And that is why I got such a low number, so not all have apparently been added to the ATP database?

Yes, the lower number most likely means that the NGA database has not been updated. There could also be some errors in the registration numbers between the two databases because NGA is an informational database (contains other changeable/additional data) not the official registration database.

I keep hearing that there are something like 80,000 registered daylilies. I just added up the amounts posted at the top, and it's less than 55,000. Where are the other 25,000?

Natalie - I jumped over 5 years at a time before 1990. So there are probably another 30,000 more in the in-between years. I was just curious to see the numbers and wondered when daylilies started to become popular and hybridizers came on the scene.

The information you posted is very fascinating, Becky. Thank you for compiling this info. It is incredible how much have developed in hybridizing over the last 10 years. The new intros just get better every year.

If you go to the AHS cultivar search page, select "show all daylilies", it says there are 82,639 registered cultivars. That's a lot of daylilies!

I have to wonder if daylilies have the MOST cultivars of any plant in the world?

I guess that is why daylilies are at the top of the list when going to the NGA plants database, lol!
