Thread OP

Help!! My landlord left this tree as they didn't think it would survive the move from Colorado to California. I currently am feeding it 1x a week and a pitcher on water. I'm now noticing some of the fern things are turning brown(See picture.) So any help on how I can care for this little lady would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! Also it lives in Colorado at 9,100FT.

Hi AkMossberg, Welcome!

Your lovely tree appears to be Norfolk Island Pine (Araucaria heterophylla) commonly sold as a house plant during the holiday season. Many folks put their container plants outside during the summer and bring them inside before the weather turns cold. I can't offer tips for indoor care as mine always stayed outside year round. I even had one that took root in the ground and the pot disintegrated. Hopefully others who grow it as a houseplant will be along soon to offer suggestions.

Lin is right on with the ID. As for care, is this where it has always been or did you recently move it to this spot? Have you recently reported it? Do you check the soil before watering to see how wet/dry it is?

Don't know the direction of the windows, but the spot looks like a nice location for it. If you recently repotted, you might notice a little dieback, but it should bounce back fairly quickly. Watering (or lack of) is usually a big culprit of houseplant issues. Check the soil before you water - use a little stick (good) or your finger (better) and dig down just an inch or two. If the solid is still damp, hold off water for a few days and check again by digging in a different spot. This will help keep you from overwatering as well as underwatering. Could also be a fertilizer issue. Have you fertilized it lately?

Most plants sold as Norfolk Island Pine are actually Cook Island Pine, Araucaria columnaris.

@Metrosideros Dave, I had no idea. I know many nurseries and garden centers around here during the holidays just sell them as "Norfolk Island Pine". I don't currently have one of those plants but I have grown many in the past. At our old house I had 2 potted plants that sat out behind our shed for a few years and ended up taking root in ground and the plastic pots had to be cut away. I gave a neighbor a small plant once that she immediately put in the ground and it grew huge.

We're in the process of hurricane prep so I need to get back outside to secure more stuff but my photos for Norfolk Island Pine (Araucaria heterophylla) should probably be moved to the entry for New Caledonian Pine (Araucaria columnaris) Not sure if we'll be without power or for how long once the storm comes through here but when I get back online I'll try to remember to move them over.
