I have several buddleia still in flower including two Blue Chip Dwarf variety in large pots. These although dwarf have become rather large and top heavy. I intend to give them a trim to remove the dead flowers before winter, followed by a more substantial prune in the spring.
Is this the correct treatment.?

That is what is recommended.
They usually grow very vigorously - mine will add six feet of branch each year when healthy, after similar pruning.

Pruning won't discourage Buddleia. I used to cut mine to the ground every couple years and let them start over.

As well as coming back vigorously from the stump, those limbs can be inserted into garden soil, and will root with no other encouragement.
It is important to acknowledge that buddleja comes with a huge downside, being considered invasive in areas that get good percipitation.
