Hi, plant folks! I had a volunteer vine come out of nowhere that I noticed about six weeks ago. It's growing on top of my plumbago. It looked like something in the Fabaceae family, but that's a big family! I decided to wait and see if it would bloom because I doubted I could get an ID otherwise. Well, it bloomed, and it's kind of pretty. If it's something native, I wouldn't mind keeping it as a host plant for my butterflies. I haven't seen any caterpillars on it, but maybe I'll know why if I find out what it is. Just wanted to add that I'm not sure where this came from. I've had some plants "reappear" this year after Dad tilled the soil and turned up some seeds, but this doesn't look like anything I can ever recall planting. Thanks in advance!

I checked the ISB Atlas of Florida Plants and it only lists two Astragalus species in the state, and only one (A. obcordatus) is present in my county. http://www.florida.plantatlas....

The Florida Botany group on Facebook helped ID this as Rosary Pea (Abrus precatrorius). Of course, it's a category I invasive in Florida. Time to start pulling!

Good idea to remove since the beans are deadly toxic.
The whole plant is toxic and, apparently, can cause bad allergic reactions on the skin so be careful when pulling and wash up well after. Be careful not to get the sap in your eyes or in any wounds. Google it. I'm not exactly sure how dangerous exposure to the leaves, stems, and roots are, but Abrin poisoning is not something you want to risk.

Thanks for the warning, Danita! I knew the seeds were poisonous. I wear rose gloves when I garden so I'm pretty covered up. And I wash my hands a lot, too. I'll be very careful, but I'll definitely aggressively remove this invasive! There are cows around the neighborhood, including across the street and I don't want it to spread to them.
