This is a real showpiece during bloom time. It's large fuzzy leaves are very aromatic in the unpleasant range when disturbed. It's cut to the woody stubs every other year to refresh it's good looks and maintain its size to about 3 feet across and tops out at about 2 feet tall. The flower stalks are another two feet tall and the flowers are in whirls at intervals up the stalk (interrupta). Salvia Lovers Guide to Salvias , by John Whittlsey, has a nice photo of the plant here in Hamilton Square Garden. Overall a very low maintanence, drought tolerant plant.

@HamiltonSquare Leslieray

Your plant in full bloom looks wonderful. I bet the bees love it and are all over it when it is in bloom.

Debating, debating. To ask or not to ask? Dare I ask? Oh, what the heck

@HamiltonSquare - You said in part that "It's cut to the woody nuns". I can't help myself. What the heck are 'woody nuns'?

The Hummers and Valley Carpenter Bees take quite and interest in the flowers Marilyn and as for woody nuns Joan....just a very odd typo I didn't catch. Here is what it looks like now. I think it needs a cut back to the stubs or nubs soon. It'll start to regrow right away and recover into a nicer looking and slightly more compact plant. I'll submit a photo after and track it's progress as it regrows. I tip my hat to you.

Here is the follow-up of the "treatment" this gets every couple of years to keep it from taking over and to refresh it's bushyness.
