Background history:

'Watusi Warrior' is a dormant tetraploid introduced in 2003 by Chambers-Moldovan. Hybridizer Steve Moldovan did his hybridizing at Moldovan's Garden in Avon, Ohio.

Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Watusi Warrior')

I really like its dark red color but the flowers substance cannot hold up to the heat and will melt by early afternoon. It is not pod fertile for me. I am not sure if it is pollen fertile because I have not tried to pollinate its pollen with other daylilies due to its weak petal substance. It has alot of buds on the scape and many buds will bloom at the same time.

I love this one. It was planted in '15 so I have only seen blooms this growing season but it is tall reaching the registered height of 36 inches and maybe even taller with the 5.5 inch blooms. It looks like velvet and holds up well in wet weather. All blooms are consistent in form and color. Although I did not get the registered branching, I did have blooms over a long stretch. I expect a better show next season. This is a keeper for me for sure.

This plant bloomed its little head off, less than a year after planting. Starting in June 24 to July 20, Watusi Warrior bloomed 19 flowers. I think it held its color and substance quite well, despite heat and rain.

Just being it's pretty self

2022…WW has done pretty well. It has increased slightly and put on a nice show this summer from July 4-24 with 28 flowers. A solid Midseason bloomer. By October it was at 9 fans with a slight case of rust.

2023 update…a good year for WW. It only bloomed from July 2-21 with at least 25 blooms and ended the season with 13 fans. It is quickly approaching clump strength.
