Thanks I think you're right (using an image search). This plant has some long tubes that look a bit like roots but are out of the soil. Can it be propagated by cutting them?

Yes, Split-Leaf Philodendron (Monstera deliciosa)

Those long "tubes" are adventitious roots looking for something to grab onto for climbing. If those roots reach the ground, they will naturally travel into the soil. To propagate your plant, you will need a piece of stem. This is a photo of a stem that broke off of my Monstera deliciosa plant a few weeks ago; I stuck it in water until I could find time to plant it.

More specifically, this is Monstera deliciosa var. borsigiana. It's a somwhat smaller and more "viney" variety of Monstera deliciosa. Mind you, I said "somewhat smaller" - once this one gets going and climbing, it's leaves can still get pretty large!

Thanks. There are buds on the adventitious roots. It seems from this article that one can propagate a plant from root cuttings: https://www.ndsu.edu/pubweb/ch...

You can fairly easily propagate them from stem cuttings, but not from the root alone. In you original picture, the stem is along the top center of the pic - what the leaf petioles are directly attached to. All of the long, thin, brown (almost rope-like) strands that are coming out and coiled on the tabletop next to the red pot are the air roots. In nature these are for stabilization as well as nutrient absorption, but new plants cannot be started from just those roots themselves. A portion of the stem must be attached.

@Carter, are you a botanist. Your knowledge impresses me enough I have found myself becoming nosey and wondering if you teach at a college, or some other important botanist duty like saving the planet from noxious weeds or something. He he. Always nice to hear from you,

Lol, thanks, Laurie! No, I really am just a hobbyist grower/collector and love growing and reading about plants. I've been avidly doing so for about 20 years now. It certainly helps in this particular case that M. deliciosa happens to be one of my favorite plants! Green Grin!
