Hi Gail and welcome Welcome! We'll need to know where you are to advise you on this. Could you please fill in your profile to show your city/state/country (just a zone doesn't help much, if at all).

Thanks Greene I agree with Elaine where you live makes a huge difference on the size of the tree. As for the roots they can grow out pretty far They won't damage the foundation of a house like other trees do so near the house is fine but they can get into septic lines if planted near your leach field. In a good fig growing climate zone 8b or higher fig trees can live well over 100 years I actually was given cuttings from a 120 year old tree a few years ago. In colder zones they can get freeze damage in winter and don't live as long but you can still get 50 years or more in a micro climate or sheltered location like a south facing wall or the south side of a building.
Welcome! to garden.org I look forward to hearing where you live, maybe I can suggest a good cultivar for you.

I live in zone 8a (South Carolina) and fig trees grow wonderful here. I have found they do like to grow near a wall, or fence. Something to shelter them a little during the extreme heat or the extreme cold. I agree about the septic lines. They will get into those and I've heard they will get into water lines too so be cautious where you plant them. I make sure mine has a lot of early sun up until around 4:00 or 5:00 in the afternoon and then it gets shaded out for the rest of the day. Here in zone 8b, the sun after 4:00 until it goes down can be pretty brutal.

@RobinM air layered wow you go girl Thumbs up zone 8b you must be on the coast. Do you know what kind you grow? if not snap a pic of the figs and foliage and I'll let you know what type you have. The most common in the Southeast is Celeste
