with Elaine where you live makes a huge difference on the size of the tree. As for the roots they can grow out pretty far They won't damage the foundation of a house like other trees do so near the house is fine but they can get into septic lines if planted near your leach field. In a good fig growing climate zone 8b or higher fig trees can live well over 100 years I actually was given cuttings from a 120 year old tree a few years ago. In colder zones they can get freeze damage in winter and don't live as long but you can still get 50 years or more in a micro climate or sheltered location like a south facing wall or the south side of a building.
