Can you let us know what kind of maple it is, and roughly where you are located? Do you know if the tree is grafted? Some areas have been hot and dry this year so my first thought is the same as Daisy's, perhaps it didn't get enough water? Some maples will also get shrivelled leaves if there is very cold weather in autumn before the leaves have fallen. If you could post a picture of the plant and the pot it may also help.
