The thread "Our Orchid blooms in October 2016" in Orchids forum

October came and went with lots of gorgeous blooms and good conversation. Around here in the NE our Orchids are all inside for some weeks now, as November 1. rolls in with a touch of frost on lawns and car windows.
Let me start with my Renantanda Boon Rubb, all buds are now open.

Brassokeria Mayan Spirit keeps it up

I have posted the Ceratostylis retisquama already a couple of times, but I just couldn't resist snapping another quick pic. It is always an easy bloomer, but it is particularly happy this Fall.

Regarding the following Spiranthes odorata, I had them growing in my backyard at the overflow of our little (bath tub -) bog. One plant came up from seed in the bog and I had potted it up and treated it as one of my tropical terrestrials. It did so well growing like this, that I moved the other plants which had been declining, also to a pot in straight peat moss.
The flowers are strongly Anise scented, really nice!

Also the Ancistrochilus rothschildianus blooms some more. The scent on this one reminds me of a dog coming inside after getting wet from rain.

Also, would you please do me a favor? Take a look at your Orchid forum home page. I added a small selection of your blooms at the right side of the page. Now how many more can I fit on this? On my IPad it looks like I have room for 2 more thumbnails, on DH's IMac the last pic is just about flush wirh the lines of emojis.
How does it look on yours? Stop here or add 1 or 2 more before I need to start deleting when I add a pic?

This is C. Caribbean Skies and the photo was taken just as the sun was coming up. The lighting is LED in the solarium. The petals and sepals have a nice shimmer to them but the lighting doesn't pick it up well.

Oncidium Sharry Baby has started to bloom! It is still making some more flower spikes, so I hope to see more all the way to Christmas

Tarev, I just those colors.

My NOID Den is finally blooming. There are only 3 buds, I thought I had everything well watered before we had to evacuate but it dried up and many of the buds blasted. This plant always looks healthy and clean compared to some of my others.

Oh, your Sharry Baby is such a beautiful color in that picture, Tarev.

Ken, I wonder if the little "hood" that's over top of the lip could actually be the two missing tepals?

Ursula, on the pictures at the side of the forum menu, it looks like there is infinite room on my display - the pictures are already below the line of emojis. But I guess I haven't disabled the ads yet because I have an ad above the pictures, and also one below.

It is Spring here and my dendrobiums began to bloom.

They're looking so lovely, Ceci. I really like the nobile type Dens with that dark spot in the lip.

Alice, I've noticed too that Dens don't seem to be susceptible to nearly as many diseases as the other types I grow.

You may have noticed it is growing in sphagnum, it came that way about this time last year and did so well, this is the 3rd flowering, I did not want to rock the boat. Maybe it will soon be time to check the inside of the medium to see if it has begun to deteriorate. Any damage on the leaves was caused by it being outside for the summer where it was the target of the evil flying pine straw that mars all my plants that are out enjoying the warm weather.

My Bulbophyllum echinolabium is blooming. I got this from Ken (drdawg) in late spring or early summer and didn't expect it to bloom this season, much less this early! Yes it has the wonderful fragrance of roadkill but only when right up on the bloom; it has become much less in the past day or so.



I am impressed with the size of the bloom - one of the largest of orchids (this is about a foot tall!). The color is a somewhat muted but the shape is excellent. I enjoy the plant itself - the pseudobulbs are very interesting.

Bob, it is a beauty and smells so evil! And the good thing is, on mature plants the spike will keep on producing blooms for a few months!

It is the only Orchid I never bring into the living room.....😝
