'Mauna Loa' is a dormant tetraploid introduced in 1976 by Roberts. No further information is known about this hybridizer.

Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Mauna Loa')

For the short time I had it I did feel it was the ideal orange color. Sadly, it was in a field of the evil Houttuynia cordata 'Chameleon' here and had to be dug up and potted along with hundreds of other daylilies so I've lost track of it.

I got this from Smokey's Daylily Gardens as a freebie in the spring of 2011 or 12 and planted it in the field with a couple other varieties. It made a nice clump with very little care from me before I dug it up and transplanted it this fall. I know I planted it out in two areas- so next year's performance will be different as one new area gets more sun and one new area will get more water. It doesn't seem to multiply quickly for me, but I do recall a 3-4 week-ish bloom period.

Good sized blooms of substance, held above the scapes bot not towering over.

I also like its form and flashy color... The bright orange is a knock-out in my garden

Has been a very reliable bloomer for me even in part shade.

The massive bright orange flower just grabs your attention. I love it.

It does very well here in zone 6 It is always bright and pretty.

Making changes to my garden this year had me taking out several daylilies. "Mauna Loa" was one that had to go. While the color was intense it did not perform well in my garden.
