Maybe a Geranium sp., Giving us the geographical location where this plant is growing would be helpful.

Looks like wild carrots....also called Queen Anne’s Lace. Wild carrots were a common pasture plant.

Does the root smell like carrots?

The stems are hairy. The hairy stems and stalk is a very important identification element and separates the wild edible carrots from very deadly members of the same family, such as Poison Hemlock which has a hairless stalk.

It smells like a potato.

I was hoping it was a wild carrot but the leaf doesn't look anything like it.

The leaf looks like a cut-leaf geranium but the root doesn't. So confused.

Not sure at all, but maybe Geranium carolinianum? It would be easier if you had photo's of the flowers..

I can't find any that have flowers. They all look about the same size. Just growing along with the grass.

It would be great if they were something edible. I have a garden and they are growing alongside my carrots. I don't know if I should pull them

Do they have any smell? The leaves when crushed and/or the taproot?

The leaves do resemble Geranium carolinianum but the ones that used to grow in my yard didn't have roots that looked like those in Jackie's photos. Here's a photo from our database for comparison:

It looks like Callirhoe; most likely Callirhoe involucrata.
Winecup (Callirhoe involucrata)

It's gorgeous when blooming!

It indeed looks like Callirhoe involucrata which has a somewhat similar taproot:
