Hi Alan,

The parentage is listed in the registry as L. nepalense X unnamed white-flowered Div. VII (Oriental) seedling. Hybridised by H.W. Hyde & Son.

It must be fertile, as there are two new hybrids with it as a parent: http://garden.org/thread/view_...

Kushi Maya I have heard is known to be sterile. The new OTs Yin and Yang, I believe are triploid. My guess is someone converted Kushi to a tetra form to regain fertility, then crossed with an OT that resulted in the triploid forms. Or maybe done in a lab.

Welcome Alan Welcome!

I feel honored to meet you here. I consider your Dad to be the best liked and most admired lilium hybridizer/breeder there ever was. I'm happy to see that you want to get started doing some lily work, too. I'm sure you will enjoy this forum and use it often as you move forward in your work.

There's a strong group of 'regulars' that are central to this forum. Each member of this central group seems to have their own special niche of lily growing expertise, whether it be simply growing lilies in mixed garden arrangement for beauty or hybridizing with a purpose. In time, you'll begin to recognize each for their individuality. For instance, my interests lie in hybridizing and breeding of primarily DIv. VI material and most of my experience is from hands on--in the dirt growing.

Concerning your question about Kushi Maya, I suggest you contact Richard Hyde directly. He's a good communicator and usually quite prompt with returning messages. Concerning Kushi Maya, the original scaled cloned stock seemed to be strong growers, but that there may be a hardiness issue between various runs with tissue culture clones and/also a difference between those raised under glass and those in the field. I got this information from Richard Hyde's blog/facebook page.

Take a little time to explore this forum, too. Check out the Tree Mail private message feature (envelope-upper right) and notifications and especially the plant data base for 'lilies'. Lots of good features here. And, feel free to ask any question, anytime.

Best wishes moving foward Smiling

Alan,

There is another nepalense hybrid on the market - 'African Lady'. The background on this one is not as clear.

Your father had bred & sold a lily by the name of 'Oriental Charm' that was registered as L. speciosum var. rubrum X L. nepalense. Do you know if your father had other hybrids between Orientals and L. nepalense?

I am also very interested in the Oriental x L. nepalense crosses.

Busy building a lily collection...
Hello - this is the first time I have posted to this forum, but I was wondering what people's experiences were with using 'Kushi Maya' as a pollen parent? I noticed today in my frost-free greenhouse that a few of my back-crosses between L. nepalense x 'Kushi Maya' have germinated and are pushing through. Germination took about 6 weeks from planting, so I guess that they are both in the immediate epigeal category. I made the back-cross because of my three L. nepalense bulbs only one is up to flowering size (though that one is pretty vigorous). Both types of lily are doing well for me. They are in a shady north-facing bed close to the house. The bed is underlain by ballast used to raise up the house a little when we had it built, so it stays moist but not waterlogged. (Which is a good thing as we are in the middle of our second "atmospheric river" event in as many weeks.) I'll keep you informed of progress. Attached are pictures of the (hopefully happy) parents. I should add that the reverse cross with L. nepalense as the pollen parent did not take...

Lilium 'Yin' and 'Yang' are registered as div. VIII LT. So 'kushi maya' x (longiflorum x trumpet)? Some1 said earlier they are 'kushi maya' x OT.

The Kushi Maya x OT was just a guess.

I am confused with the LT designation for Yin and Yang. That deep dark maroon had to have come from somewhere, and it is not L. longiflorum or trumpets.

I am also confused. Never saw LT. They are 1st hybrids from Kushi Maya. So Kushi is 100% pod perent.

If you check official description at H.W. Hyde page (under the Yang) it say: 'Yang' has taken eight years to create, a 'Kushi Maya', Longiflorum, Oriental Trumpet hybrid.
