Someone asked to use my photo from this site. They even offered to pay me for the use. It was from a nursery in Europe. I don't know if I should let them? Ask for money? how much? I've never been ask before. How shall I proceed?

That's pretty neat. Sounds like an honest company, they inquired; many sites have just hi-jacked some of our photos.
I'd just be up front with them, ask them how much and go with the flow.
Nothing that's been done can ever be changed.

That is pretty neat that they asked. My photos have been hijacked and have shown up all over the place. No one ever asked me and no one EVER offered to pay me.

I would think paypal would be ok. I'm sure you know about the usual scams involving money orders, not to give out personal info or bank account info ect.

The nursery sells a lot of Hostas. I guess I could ask for hostas in payment?

It's not uncommon for this to occur. The going rate is usually around $50 for the full high resolution image.

A couple of years ago a company, Millette Photo Media: http://www.millettephotomedia.... contacted me via tree mail about purchasing one of my plant photos for $50. They paid me via PayPal; the total I received was something like $47 and change ... probably due to a PayPal fee.

Duane, did they want to take your photos directly from garden.org? The company that contacted me saw my plant picture here but asked me to send a photo to them via e-mail.

Here's what they said---
I would like to kindly ask you for a favor to allow us to use that picture in our web shop. If you agree, please send my your conditions. I am ready to pay you for that. I will give the credit as Photo:duane456 or to your real name if you want.

Have you tried googling the company name to see if you can find out anything about them? It's great that they are agreeing to YOUR conditions and also that they will credit you as being the photographer of the photo. I'd suggest PayPal as the form of payment too and ... as I think FrillyLily said, just don't ever give out any personal information. If they say they need a bank account number or anything other than your name, for transferring the funds to you ... that truly is a RED Flag.

I too have had photos snatched off the internet. A few months ago I was googling and came across a photo of mine. I clicked on the contact-us button and sent a note asking them to remove my photo from their page and not to use any of my photos without explicit permission from me but I never got a response and my picture is still showing at their site. They took the photo from the Dave's Garden website and cropped out my watermark before posting it to their site. It's not a huge deal to me really because I'm just a novice at picture taking but there are some really wonderful photographers out there and if they can steal a novice's photo, I'm sure they can steal a professional's too.

MillettePhotomedia just contacted me and want to purchase one of my shots. Only problem is I was shooting jpgs. that day not RAW. Not sure if that would be ok. I let them know that. Will see what transpires. Checked them out and they are an online photo supplier. (People may purchase photos from them). It would be nice to get paid instead of hijacked. I will let you know if anything transpires from this.

Ina, Hurray! Congrats! I'm old and a bit technically challenged when it comes to cameras, smart phones, computers, etc. My photos always upload in jpeg format but I have no clue what that means. I'm sure someone from Millette Photo Media will reply and let you know if they need you to change anything.

You might want to ask about the purpose of the photo. If its for a label in a nursery that is one thing, but a catalog picture should get more. And you might ask for photo credit if that matters to you. Oh, and ask about exclusivity. You might not want to lose ownership of the picture. You might consider getting free product in return. Lots of possibilities...

On the other hand, if it was just a good picture and you aren't in the photo business, you might want to just take the money and run, LOL!

I sent them my photo, unfortunately I only kept the cropped copy not the original. It was to small for them to work with. They prefer jpg. and Tff formats.
They had a client looking for a photo of Longfield's Cheese and Wine. Anyone out there with a good pic of it could contact them.

I got a photo request once, for a winterberry.. But my original ( probably cropped) was not good enough format, pixels, or whatever.. so, there went my fifteen seconds of fame, lol.
Plant it and they will come.

Interesting. I keep all my original 4-7 meg photos. Maybe I should shop some around. And deliberately spend some time taking better ones.

I've sold photos before and it is definitely worth keeping your original high res photos. Payment through Paypal is pretty reliable.
