This is a two year old Nepenthes, started from a cutting. I don't know the specific variety. Though the plant is growing and appears to be healthy, all the "pitchers" have dry, brown, wrinkly "pitchers" and new pitchers don't seem to be forming properly. What's wrong with this plant/pitchers?

Ken, I found this info:

Pitchers only live for a few months. Some can live a lot longer. When the leaf at the top of the pitcher starts curling in and turning brown, the peristome will be soon to follow. After the browning has gotten about halfway down the pitcher, cut off the tendril from the end of the leaf. It will keep your plant looking a lot healthier.

Yes, I was thinking that maybe the pitchers are just old. I noticed that one I have grew a whole flush of pitchers at once and then they all died at once. Luckily, it grew more.

Thank you, @crawgarden and @Daisyl. I did not know that these pitchers had such a short life-span. These pitchers will probably average 9 mo. I thought it strange that there were no small/young pitchers, only all those that began growing last fall/winter. I reckon I will understand this plant's growing cycles more come spring.

Yup, they just dry out like that. I just try to ignore the brown dry part as much as I can, eventually it will all dry up and just need to trim it. My Nepenthes did that too, especially when we were away for an extended period, I guess it got dried out longer than it should, but now we are back so carefully nurturing the plant to make new leaves and eventually the newer pitchers. It is doing better now, new leaves are out, and I see new pitcher growth too. I also see that it is the older pitchers that are heading out, so similar to most plants, the older leaves drying out first.

I have seen in a youtube video where one grower just cuts off the brown upper part, and just maintain the still lower green part, since it is still attached to the main leaf, and still does some photosynthesis too.

Whew, Rj @ crawgarden, that's exactly what all my pitchers looked like. I have already trimmed the brown off, leaving the green bottoms filled with liquid. Now I know that young plants, with newly formed pitchers, will continue growing those pitchers through the cold months. I will no longer worry when I see those dead pitcher tops on my mature plants. Who says one gets too old to learn?

It makes sense aft I thought about it for awhile, I'm guessing the pitcher is the flower and eventually all flowers fade, die etc. Saw that and thought it would make your day, wonder what the average length of the life of the pitcher is.

I think these plants actually flower but I haven't grown one long enough to see that happen.

The pitcher is just a leaf, a clever modified leaf. It fetches its own dinner. Smiling

Mine have never bloomed either. I'll ask a friend who has a monster one if her's has ever bloomed.

I have 2 long, brown, leafless stems co.ingfrom main part. Can I cut these off? Then will the green at the bottom still live and can I root that? Will the empty stems root?

Can anyone help me? My pitcher plant was well and healthy until a week ago but now it's all shrivelled up. I regularly put distilled water in the tray it stands in and have never had this problem beforehand. It's about 3-4 years old

Welcome!

It looks like it is covered in aphids or some other bug.

Do you provide winter dormancy? If not, Serracenia slowly die (but the bugs aren't helping).

Insecticidal ASAP. Follow that with another spraying in 10 days. That's a bad infestation. I do not know whether you'll save this plant @FMSmith.
