I have burlapped rhododendrons here in Zone 4 and they've been fine.

Several Rhodies in my neighborhood, no one wraps them....seem to do fine in the spring. 4b

I wrap the ones here because they are exposed to the prevailing winter wind which can cause dessication, but the main reason is that if I didn't there'd be nothing left after the deer finished with them. If it weren't for the deer and their exposure to winter winds I wouldn't bother, but it doesn't do them any harm to be burlapped.
