Not sure I know the plant, maybe Aspidistra? If it is, they tolerate low light well, but probably do better with more light than minimum.
The bugs could be mealybugs, and they are very tricky about hiding down in the plant (though this is very open and I don't see many hiding places.)
I'm not an expert on those either, have just discovered them on an Aglaonema, and have given up an African Violet rather than go through the battle.

I'd be tempted to unpot, remove some dirt especially the surface, inspect, and pot into fresh good potting mix and slightly larger pot. Current pot is on the small size- careful with watering on demand and not keeping too wet, never sit in a puddle. Now wait and see what someone more knowledgeable says.
