Thanks for sharing! I love caterpillars, in case you couldn't tell. For everyone who loves caterpillars and the things they become, check out the monthly thread we have going: The thread "December 2016 Butterflies, Moths & Larva" in Gardening for Butterflies, Birds and Bees forum

Hurray! My first banner Hurray!

Thank you EVERYONE for the thumbs and especially the acorns!!!!

@mellielong Melanie, I love seeing butterflies fluttering in the garden and (only) some of the caterpillars - this one is rather striking but ....
well sometimes they can be quite devastating! For instance, I have the Asian Boxwood caterpillar (cydalima perspectalis) and the Ermine moth caterpillar (Yponomeuta cagnagella) both of which I would like to be rid of! The ermine moth caterpillar completely defoliates my spindle tree - any tips????

I understand, we get Tussock Moth caterpillars every spring and some years they are so bad I have to spray. I kill them by hand if I can, but when things get too bad, I use BT spray. It's short for bacillus thuringiensis, a naturally occurring bacteria that caterpillars ingest and then die. It's organic since it's a bacteria that normally exists in the wild, anyway. Just make sure to only spray it on the affected plant so you don't harm any other caterpillars that you want in your garden!

Thanks Melanie, will try BT but hoping they aren't so bad next year. As you mentioned, it differs probably depending on how cold the winter is.

@nativeplantlover Thanks for the acorn Cheryl - so appreciated!
