Your 2nd pic looks to be the real thing.....but you can get artificial instant effect ones in this as well.

with Plantladylin, Boxtrees, Buxus sempervirens or other Buxus evergreens are often used for hedges and for topiaries.

Do you know what the buildings are in the pictures, it might be possible to get a closer look via Google? I agree with Silversurfer that the top one doesn't necessarily look like a hedge or maybe even real. There's something along the top of it that looks like the edge of a frame or something.

To get a green hedge of that height/thickness using Ligustrum sp will take years.

Yes, the bare panels in some of those pictures could be what appears to be at the top of the greenery in that first ID picture. I was thinking it might be with a climber but the "green wall" would probably make more sense, especially since there are large rectangle shapes in the green. High maintenance though, I assume it is a hotel??

Which comes back to my question...where did the original poster find these two photographs?
Can @TheArquitect please provide link(s) so we can narrow down the source of the images and that in turn will help with the identification process.

I'm real curious as to where the second photo was taken ... just because I love that building!
