Happy 2017 everyone!

Happy to see my Pinguicula is back to its carnivore stage...was waiting for the succulent phase to end.

Of all the insects that will find its way to my Ping: baby grasshoppers. Cute nymphs, but eventually can be destructive, hope the Pings will have a chance to enjoy them:

Brought out one of the Pings outdoors a couple of days ago. I saw one container with gnats, so I thought this Ping will love it.

It took about a day before I saw some gnats caught..for sure my Ping is happy! Big Grin Weather is getting warmer and drier, but I think it is still okay. At least the Ping got something nice to digest...the little grasshopper that found its way on it a few days back took a bite and dented some parts of the leaves, so I quickly caught those and squashed them out.

With our ongoing heatwave, I still kept my Pinguiculas outdoors but in shade. It is getting its meal of fungus gnats, so it is doing okay. I am zealously watering it early in the morning, got to help it endure our dry heat. So far it is enduring well. Our triple digit temps hovers from 103F to 112F, glad it can take it. I see nice new growth at the center, so I know it is coping well.

Look good, Tarev.

It appears you have a bit of snail or slug damage on one of the plants. It is no big deal unless the damage becomes extensive.

Make sure the growing media does not dry out - which can happen really fast in your hot weather. When I water my Pings, I let the water in the tray go about 1/2 inch up the pot. That holds them for about 48 hours.

Yup that is why I water them daily outdoors, if it is indoors then I let it sit in water. Not snail damage..I think it is our ever eager grasshopper. Nasty bugger. I am trying to test how hot it can endure. Big Grin

The one plant looks like P. macroceras. I grow mine outdoors in the partial shade of a couple of Sarracenia. They get full sun for a few hours in the morning and late afternoon, but are blocked from mid-day sunlight.

Actually it is either Pinguicula gigantea or Pinguicula primuliflora. I messed up the tags, when they toppled over from the car and then some did not last while we were away last year, oh well. As long as I know they are Pinguiculas, I am fine with it, I don't go too specific cultivar crazy with them. Just happy to have some carnivores thriving here! Smiling

Update on my Pings after this year's summer period. I kept them outdoors whole summer, but in a shady area. Giving them daily watering direct at root zone. Endured very well the long duration of our very dry heat waves that goes 100F++ for about a week or so at its peak.

And this Fall, one of them is showing off some nice blooms Lovey dubby

Overnights are cooling down, but I think it is still okay with it. I want to let it experience its first Fall rainfall, whenever it comes, before I start to hide in indoors for the winter season.

This may be a dumb question but I'm not familiar with Pinguiculas, what is the carnivorous part of the plant? I would love to add one to my collection, so interesting! Lovey dubby

Hi Lindsey, the leaves are sticky, really good in catching fungus gnats. But it goes non-carnivorous, just growing like a succulent depending on seasons/temperatures:

Photos when it is on carnivore mode:

Believe it or not, I ordered it online from WALMART haha. Pinguicula primuliflora. It just arrived yesterday with a lot of little babies growing with it, and a nice pretty flower. Smiling @tarev how do you know when it is in the carnivorous stage? Thank you so much! I’m so excited. Lovey dubby

That is a good find! Usually if I see it catching the gnats Big Grin then it is quite obvious it is doing its thing. The leaves also show a sticky, greasy surface.

When it is not in carnivore-mode the leaf surface just looks like a smooth echeveria or sempervivum.

I was wondering about the care for it! So the label said to keep it in standing water (which I do for my other carnivorous plants), but online I read that they are prone to root rot and to just water them if the surface gets a tiny bit dry. What do you recommend? Smiling

My area here is much drier, so my carnivores are in standing water.

I grew the Pings indoors first by our north facing window, and I tend to forget to check its moisture at soil level so, I put it in standing water.

Only this year that I experimented leaving it in a shady area outdoors while temps are still warm enough, so far I did not have to put it in standing water, but I do water more often outdoors so it gets its needed watering, almost daily especially during the height of summer here.

The seasons are changing again, so I need to adjust my watering frequency.
