Thread OP

Hi! I'm new to gardening and this site. I used to buy broccoflower years ago (which was a cross of broccoli and cauliflower) and I kinda forgot about it over the years, but now I can't seem to find it anywhere. Does anyone know what happened to it or if there are seeds for it still as I'd love to try to grow this?. Thank you Smiling

Hi!

I've never seen them around my area.
There seems to be a couple online sites you can order them from though such as Amazon.

As Brocolli and Cauliflower are the same species you could recreate the 'broccoflower' yourself by cross pollinating the two plants. The resulting seeds from the plant pollination will produce a hybrid plant that will grow 'broccoflower' once mature.

Welcome to NGA, @Nygrl315 !

No need to try to make your own broccoli-cauliflower cross -- quite a few seed companies offer Romanesco broccoli seeds, such as Baker Creek: http://www.rareseeds.com/roman...

for what it's worth, I've had much better luck growing this as a fall crop Smiling

You're right, I used to buy it at grocery stores but haven't seen any for a while. It was delicious!

There is also a green cauliflower that just looks like regular cauliflower, except it's green. Johnny's Seeds has one called Vitaverde. http://www.johnnyseeds.com/veg... Stokes carries this one as well.
Baker Creek has a variety that in appearance is somewhere in between the green cauliflower and the Romanesco called Green Macerata: http://www.rareseeds.com/green...

"75 days. Brassica oleracea. Open Pollinated. Plant produces good yields of lime green cauliflower/broccoli. This is a unique Italian variety with better taste and texture than other cauliflower/broccoli. It is excellent raw or cooked, it boasts a milder, sweeter flavor than white cauliflower. It has beautiful apple green sporaling buds and is especially well adapted to the north. Excellent choice for home gardens. A heirloom variety from Italy. I would suggest, your first few years planting a garden, that you try some really-easy varieties.

For early crops, I would suggest snap peas, snow peas, peas, radishes, lettuce or Bok Choy. I think those are easier to grow than broccoli or cauliflower. They don't need to "head up".

For summer, bush beans (and pole beans if you have stakes and string, or a net, or any kind of trellis or poles). Maybe summer squash like zucchini if you have an area where they can sprawl. Maybe tomatoes if you have a summer without cold nights, and are willing to start a few seeds indoors.

But the smartest thing is to do what you suggested: grow something that you know you like to EAT.

Thank you all for the help! I saw the seeds for the variety in tarev's photo but what I used to buy wasn't so spirally or jagged, looked just like green cauliflower but tasted like both. I'll research all your answers.
I have 2 raised beds and this will be my 2nd yr planting. Last yr I did snap peas, tomatoes, Bush beans and zucchini. All grew rather well but the only thing I really cared for taste-wise was the zucchini so this yr I want to do a sample garden of things to try to find varieties I like the taste of, that's when I thought of the broccoflower.
Thanks again, everyone! Thank You!

What I bought at the grocery store was called "broccoflower." Looked like this:

You might go ahead and try the Vitaverde. It is described as a cross between broccoli and cauliflower and looks just like a green cauliflower in all the photos I've seen. A number of seed companies sell it.
