Hi, This is a houseplant that has been neglected for a decade or two, and I would like to know if there is any way to rejuvenate it or do something to it? The main stem has gotten so long and ugly.. well the whole thing is not very appealing, but I don't want to just throw it out, because it survived for so long on so little don't even know what it is called.. thanks!!!!!

I would stake him up .to get his trunk straight .with some of that stretchy green tape. Dont snip top off. Its a palm.

My guess is that its a Parlor Palm (Chamaedorea elegans). They survive on neglect making them popular houseplants.

You can't prune it as its a palm so has only one terminal bud - the tip. Most plants have more than one (at leaf nodes also) but palms do not. You can clean it up a little by gently pulling/cutting off all the old dead stuff where leaves were attached.

Re-potting would probably help also as palms suffer from salt build-up in the soil. But gently - they hate having their roots disturbed.
