I field collected some seeds of Impatiens capensis last year. Has anyone had success germinating this species' seeds? I've read they do need exposure to cold wet and alternating with warm spells. I wonder if I have enough time to wintersow them? My last frost date is Mother's Day.

I've w/s some twice to far and they didn't germinate, never waited the two years...I just thought the seed wasn't fresh or viable...I am trying again this year.

It's a bit of work to germinate this annual, but it will be worth it.

I started the seeds 2 weeks ago by exposing them to warm-wet conditions. To my total surprise I found a germinated seed this morning! Woohoo!

Although, for the life of me, I do not understand why you would want to go through the trouble germinating the seeds. 😁😃

One day maybe 25 years ago, this plant suddenly popped up in my garden. I had no idea what it was, but liked it fine so I let it grow and bloom. 25 years later, I still get seedlings everywhere in the garden no matter how I try to pull them.
Oh well, at least they make good compost.

Interesting seedling, Never see impatiens Capensis in flesh, This seedling is somehow similarly lookalike a morning glory to my eyes.. how plants can have different faces during their life's time.

Tofi, I agree, the cotyledons do resemble those of morning glory. I am so excited to see a first leaf forming now.

I have the rest of the seeds in the refrigerator, and plan to remove them after a month to see if any more of them will germinate.

Whoops! The seedling is a morning glory. So sorry for the confusion!

Somehow an Ipomoea purpurea seed got in with the Impatiens capensis seeds. I wonder what cultivar it could be? Soon, we may know.



I have the Impatiens capensis seeds in the refrigerator now. I will take them out in a couple of weeks to see if they germinate.

I've never tried starting morning glories under lights. I usually just direct sow. I always thought the seedlings would grow too fast for pot containment. Do you have to repot before setting outside? Its easier for me to remember to water if I have a plant to look at rather then bare ground. i'd like to try it under lights.

I grow almost all my morning glories in pots.

They transplant with no ill effects.

Usually I grow a plant in a small yogurt cup. Once the rootball is well established, at about the 3rd or 4th true leaf, I will transplant into its second pot. Second pot will be the one big enough to hold a vertical support.

If you visit the Ipomoea group tomorrow I should have blooms to show.
