I'd like to name my garden but I am a loss as to what to call it. Just wondering how others decided on a name for theirs.
I guess some people don't name their gardens, but they should

Though I never named the gardens as a whole, I have named each of the 30 gardens so I can find plants more easily. Example: Clematis Bourbon is in the Harper fence garden. I felt I'd need jogs to my memory as I age.

A name is tough....
I named mine both as a description and as a verb... 'gardens in the sand'

You could name it for the critters you have, or the ones that you wish to attract, for the existing vegetation.... One of the gardens I maintain is called 'still oaks'.
Or for the plants that you plan to collect.

Or maybe some combination....

I hate the deer, I hate the slugs, the moles I hate them too,
the rabbits, the squirrels, the neighbors cats, oh how I hate them so!
A weed by any other name... would still be a weed...
and the Japanese Beetles?, I hate their stink!
Gumballs and mole hills, and clay and rocks,
A busy street, no privacy to see...

I don't see a lot of butterflies around here

We have too many neighbors cats to have many birds. I love hummingbirds but never had luck keeping them around. I actually think they don't use my feeders because they prefer the flowers out in the garden, but then I can't see them that way. I try not to attract 'good' things, because of all the cats! Who eat birds, but apparently don't have a taste for moles

It's always kind of a let down to visit butterfly gardens in town, as I usually have like 10 times as many...

The secret to having lots of butterflies.... Is to understand that nothing gets any benefit from turf.... Well, I've heard that Japanese beetles and cinch bugs like a lawn.... So if you want those... Otherwise, get rid of the turf and plant anything else!

Also... Learn the names of your existing vegetation, and stop calling everything weeds.... They aren't weeds, you know.

After you find out what you have, you can learn how much of it is necessary for the butterflies... They actually need those native plants that you've been calling "weeds".

Re the cats...
That's a strong reason for not using a bird feeder.

Those bird feeders just make the birds easy to catch.

I actually hate those feeder pics.... Far nicer to see the humming birds in the garden....

Guess I agree with Pirl. I don't have a cohesive name for my garden, just named planting beds. (Although not 30! ) The Rose Garden, etc....

My wife calls mine "The Messy Garden," and I'm the messy gardener. My Garden just happens.

well I doubt the butterflies have any use for Bermuda grass, poison ivy or wild onions....
I have a a huge yard, an acre and a half, so I just garden a small patch, the rest is 'lawn' but hardly any actual grass. Mostly the above mentioned along w a lot of dandelion and clover which my husband keeps mowed off short.

Stone: skunks. Skunks benefit from the grubs living in the turf.

However, our grass is bagged when cut and then used for mulch on the garden.

Frilly, it has truly never occurred to me to give my garden a name, other than "the garden" (which is my veg garden) and "the perennial garden" which (obviously) is my garden with perennial plants.

Mine is Bamas Garden.

Yes--the gardens and sections of gardens kind of acquire names so they can be referred to in conversations about what's going on and where without too much confusion about the where, and, some kind of designation is indispensable when it comes to maps and irrigation schedules and the like.
Mostly the 'names' just evolve based on some component --like the 'grave garden' is where the critters are buried
of course, sometimes the names change --like the 'spruce garden' had to turn into the 'cypress garden' after the spruce tree blew down
not too much thought goes into most of the names based on location/component (north 40, east 40, back jungle, back wall, driveway wall, etc.) but we do have more than a few rather goofy garden names just to amuse ourselves

A couple of my flower beds are named after an object that is in them such as "The Dump Rake Garden" or "The Ferris Wheel Garden". A couple are named for their location such as "The North Side Bed", "The South Side Bed", and "The Back Fence Bed". Actually, I think I will rename these last ones to something better. The North Side Bed could be renamed "Lilies Garden" since it has a lot of Lilies planted there. I think it will be fun coming up with new names.

ferris wheel garden?!

Ferris Wheel Garden--This was given to me by a friend who used to have it on a flat wagon in parades. When he stopped doing the parades, he gave it to me. The small oak tree in the center was from my grandson who grew it at school and needed a place to plant it so my son dug up my snowball bush that was here and planted the oak here. So when I was given the Ferris Wheel, I decided to put it here and build a bed around all of it. Sorry for the long story.


This is my Dump Rake Bed. This was along a field/pasture fence on one of our farms so my DH had his friend cut the tree that had grown up in it. I decided to keep the tree that had grown into the dump rake and put bird houses on it. I need to fix it up this year as the weather and wind had destroyed some of the birdhouses.
