I'll be setting up a raised bed for my wife soon using cinder blocks and she wants to put some kind of succulents in the holes in the block. I've already got quite a variety of succulents out in one of my greenhouses and quite a few small ones that I've started from leaves but most I have no idea what their names are or whether they'd survive our weather patterns that at times during the winter could be hot/cold/wet/dry all in a two week period. For instance it's supposed to be 86 today and although it's not supposed to happen a cold front could come through and drop the temp by 50 degrees tomorrow. I'm posting some photos of some of what I have hoping maybe some of you experts can give me a hand with this.

My first question is what are your winter temperatures like? The lows?
Your above photos are wonderful and show that what you have are 'tender succulents'. These will not survive outdoors during cold winters. A combination of cold and wet will do them in.

We have a lot of variance Lynn, here are some of our averages

Of course those are averages. For instance, yesterday it was 86 and 66 list night. It was 84 today and will be 39 tonight with a wind chill of 32 so there's a lot of variance and quick changes. We could have lows in the 20's for a few days in Dec sometimes it's always a big guessing game here as to when to put plants away for the winter and again when to take them out of the greenhouses for the spring.

You could sink the smaller pots into the holes of the cinder block. That way it would be easier to take them up for winter protection. The plants are beautiful.
There are many hardy succulents that could stay out year round.

Thanks Lynn, you know I've found a lot of really nice Sempervivum for sale with some beautiful colors. I'll let my wife decide what she wants to go with. I've also got some Epis and 3 pots full of Selenicereus in that greenhouse along with various other large succulents.

And don't forget the hundreds of wonderful sedum, some upright but short, some short and mounding, and others that will trail over the sides of the blocks.

Any help is always appreciated. I have 42 Phal orchids, 36 baby Adeniums 10 baby Plumeria, a bunch of seedlings and a few other plants overwintering in my other greenhouse.

You have a greenhouse full. It must keep you busy.

Actually I have two greenhouses and yes, it does, especially in the winter when I need to keep everything watered, seeds need to be misted and so on. As I was saying about our weather, it was 66 Tues night and in the 30s last night. Never consistent in the winter.

I'm envious, Chris! 2 greenhouses! Sounds like heaven.

I have a lot of gardening books, and that one is one I return to a lot. The photos are just gorgeous. Lots of rocks with semps spilling out around them. They use a lot of sedums too. I drool over the pics, and am just now going to try making some semp areas in my yards. In AZ they will have to be shaded, and in NM they will probably love mostly sun.

Coming late to this discussion... Chris I experimented with tender succulents outside under a deck this winter and the graptoveria (which is what I think you have in the first three photos) will do fine even in extreme cold so long as they are kept on the dry side
However if you figure out a way to keep them dry in winter will it be too dry during summer? Figuring out the right drainage is an individual thing. You could also place bags or something over the plants when you know you're going to have several days of rain. I find these specific plants to be easy and forgiving! Mine sustained temps in 20s for a few weeks and are fine
