I was late getting celery seeds this year. I'm wondering if I can grow them to maturity indoors. It can get pretty warm, pretty quickly, in my location near St. Louis. I have Tall Utah 52-70R variety. Any suggestions, for or against, would be appreciated.

I would think you could still grow them, but I don't know if it gets too warm there, and do they bolt to seed?

Immature celery plants are still useful---as cutting celery.

Thanks Caroline. Assuming the indoor starts were planted outside after last frost, we would be into mid-July, with average high temps in the low to mid 90's and lots of sun, before they would reach maturity. I think the optimum range is 60 to 70. We would take some stalks early but still want many to reach full maturity. They will probably be a better late season crop, unless I can grow them to maturity indoors.

And Amsterdam Seasoning celery which seems much slower to grow or maybe the seeds were older. The seeds were purchased fresh this year.

Thanks. Those look real good. I'm still mulling over which way to go. I may plant some now and take my chances and save some for later to see how they do late-season. We use most of our celery for flavoring in soups and stews.

Thanks Philip. We like celery and use it quite often. But I'll look into celeriac. I'll get Mrs opinion too.

It may stay over winter where you are , but not here.
Cutting celery can be grown in an indoor container for the winter.

Vickie, my Tall Utah packet says it germinates in 15 to 21 days and 90 to 100 days to harvest. I would guess that it may vary by zone. I hope you have good luck with it.

It does need a long growing season to get the full-size stalks (or heads? what is a whole celery plant called, anyway?), but the good news is that they don't have to be full-size to be usable. It needs LOTS of water, or the individual stalks will be hollow. I haven't been overly successful with it in the past, but am determined to get it right -- hopefully this year!

Celeriac is great in soups and other cooked dishes (it definitely tastes like celery). Thumbs up

Sandy ! Good question. Thumbs up
I'll be making a new recipe, for a small pot of soup. 4 servings. Recipe calls for 3 to 4 stalks of celery. WHAT # Grumbling #!!! I'm not making celrery soup !
The whole celery, is a stalk.
Individual peices are called ribs.

Rolling on the floor laughing Philip !

I really hate recipes that call for "3-4 stalks (or ribs) of celery." There's a LOT of variation in size of the ribs, why don't they say something like "1 cup of sliced (or diced) celery" Grumbling

I really like celery in recipes and always throw more in than the recipe calls for anyway...
