I saw a plant labeled Vriesea espinosae for sale today at Selby Gardens. I just wanted to make sure it isn't a synonym or name change from Tillandsia espinosae. It looks different than the Tillandsia pictures but I thought I'd consult the experts first. Thanks!

Perhaps it should be added as a synonym or previous name. I forget what we classify things as at the moment. It's been a long day. Hilarious!

Thanks, Rob! I'm hesitant to propose a change if I don't feel sure. That's why we need experts like you! Thumbs up

If you ever feel the need to check something like that you can use this site...
http://www.catalogueoflife.org...

Putting Vriesea espinosae into the search box on the above page will bring you to this...
http://www.catalogueoflife.org...

This is where we admins go to for trying to keep the database up to date. In most cases the CoL is our best reference, as it gets updated based on latest research the most often out of all the databases out there. It won't help for cultivar searches, as they are not included, but it does include just about all species level plants. (Side note...there is no such thing as a complete database of all plants in the world, but CoL is striving to be just that).

If you suspect there is an error in our database you can always check it against what CoL says. If you find a discrepancy, you should 100% feel free to propose a change. We'll check it against the CoL ourselves before approving it either way. I would not worry too much about making a mistake...that happens from time to time for all of us and is easily corrected when discovered.

Another side note about synonyms....
We don't always list ALL synonyms that a plant may have, sometimes there are literally a dozen or more and sometimes those synonym names are outdated by more than 100 years. The types of synonyms I feel are important to add are ones like the one you brought to this thread... Plants commonly sold under familiar names rather than the correct name. Off the top of my head a good example of this would be Sedums. Many Sedums got moved to the Genus Hylotelephium, but we still call them Sedums.
