So this is the first year I'm trying potatoes. I planted them about 3 weeks ago and was starting to get concerned that they didn't sprout above ground so I dug one up. On the top it looked just like when I planted it but when I turned it over I noticed a bunch of white worm/maggot looking things eating into the bottom. I will try to add a picture. What are these and what should be done? Thanks.

Notice that they are both segmented. Based on the picture, the worms resemble maggots and it's possible that the potatoes already had them inside. I'm no potato expert and someone else may have a better explanation.

The aboriginal peoples and many cultures throughout the world share a common respect for nature and the universe, and all of the life that it holds. We could learn much from them!
No potato expert either but they do look like maggots. The question is whether the potato rotted and that attracted the maggots, or whether the maggots (or something else, like maybe wireworm) attacked the potato first.
The seedcorn maggot (larva of the fly Delia platura) is known to attack potato pieces, there's some info here:
Your going to need to treat soil to get rid of worms. Then, you can replant.
PS : seed potatoes can be cut into 3 to 5 pieces, with at least one eye each peice. One eye, one plant.
