Anyone walk around a town, on vacation, window shopping, etc. and see a seed or seed pod that needs a good home?

This past weekend we were walking around a town that had tons of Texas Mountain Laurels - there were many many many seeds that would have been swept up and thrown away.. we just had to save them !!!! Honestly we are just trying to help clean up the city :)

Heck ya ! I'll do that.
I'll see say, a zinna, growing somewhere. I like it. It has dryed up blooms on it. I'll deadhead it. Now i have seeds...FREE ! Hurray!

Now ? I want opinions hear.
I'm at home depot. Looking at succulents. I see a leaf that was broken off, just laying on floor. Its trying to make a baby. If i take it, and put it in my pocket, to grow it at home.
Is that stealing ?

It won't hurt to ask. Smiling

I have a friend that worked at Home Depot, in the garden center. He told me they throw everything away, the don't discount old plants, they throw pots and all away Grumbling What a waste and an unfriendly policy. This policy may be for this store only though. So ask Crossing Fingers!

I hear Lowe's has a different policy. More friendly. Smiling

H D is closer to me, so I do shop for some things, but hardly ever buy plants.

Happy growing Smiling

@PlantMania

That's a lot of seeds, lol. And the Texas Mountain Laurel is a beautiful shrub. Those purple, sweetly scented flowers are lovely. Lovey dubby Are you going to sow the seeds in the ground or pots?

I've gathered these and they were easy to germinate. Nick the seed and soak, place in wet paper towel, give a fresh rinse daily until they swell, split and a fat root appears. Then plant Smiling

My problem was I did this in the late Fall and I lost the seedlings over the winter. Sad But, I had read that the seeds had to be sort of pink, fully ripe wouldn't germinate. So I had to see if that was true or not Big Grin What I read was wrong.

Good thing is I still have plenty of seeds.

Happy planting Smiling

I think we will try several different methods. Crossing Fingers! I have just a few (*cough**cough*) to test.

Randy Lemmon (gardenline) states to just put the seeds in the ground where you want to them to start. He says that June, July time frame is best to get seeds since they are still pink and more of a softer shell. In our gatherings we have light pink to dark red.

We have a line of trees on our west side that I think will shade them from the afternoon blaze.

@Philipwonel

That's great! Hurray!

I was wondering if it was decided by store managers or a HD policy everywhere,

Wish ours did. Sighing!

It actually depends on the vendors for the most part. Our vendor last year (at least for my store) refused to discount plants that looked bad and it made my reps and customers upset. This year we have a new vendor so I'm not sure how that will play out yet.

Hmmmm..... hopefully I'm the only retired attorney reading this thread, o/w we'll have .... well, it could get ugly. The garden center is in the business of selling plants. I would take the position that a fallen leaf, not being a plant, cannot be sold because at the moment, at least, it has no roots, and therefore cannot be a plant. Now, if I was shopping at Annie's Annuals or some other independent outlet where they root and grow their own, that argument might not hold up because the single leaf is indeed a potential plant there. At the big box stores the single leaf is simply trash.
Can't complain too loud about how the ball bounces when I'm the one who dropped it.

It's great to have an attorney on board.

Just kidding !!!
So, if i'm tempted ! I'll just take leaf to counter with me, and say : how much for this broken off leaf ?
This is good !😁!
Home Depot cashier, goes, huh, umm, well, duh ??? Let me call manager ! Rolling on the floor laughing
