We've all seen the macrame hangers, and obviously the plastic hangers in the stores. Have you run across another way to display cascading plants indoors? I have hoyas, Easter and Orchid cacti, pothos, and heart leaf philodendron, etc that will either need to be hung or set higher, and I'd like to try something a little more artistic and fun!

Perhaps not too artistic but I have seen people set pots on steps of a folding ladder. Gene

I put some of my smaller indoor plants on a pole with casters, easier to move around as needed. You can also paint the poles if you want or add lights during the holidays. I use hang-a-pots to attach containers with lip to the pole.

If you can attach steel wire or strong fishing line, and it holds "dirt" with a way for water to drain out, you can hang it up & put plants in it. Window screen &/or landscape fabric can be used as a liner for wire items.

Both steel wire & fishing line are sold in rolls, by length, and rated for the amount of weight it can hold before breaking - for a few $$'s you can hang a LOT of pots. Steel is less frustrating regarding attaching it to things - fishing line is frustrating to tie in a knot but has a cool "invisible" effect that makes pots look like they're floating in the breeze.








And anything that grows down can grow up instead, on a pole or a trellis of any shape/size. Most of them will need your guidance to wind/weave them into a shape or mass of upright-looking foliage. There are flat trellises, tomato cages, poles, and whatever other sturdy structures you can find or make...

This is a little big to bring inside, but I love to put dangly plants in it for summer. Just getting started for the season with, u guessed it, some basket plant. The spiderwort put itself there. Will add more things as time & growth permit. Some Coleus, WJ & ...? :+) I also have an old roundish charcoal grill that is hanging up with steel wire that needs something... Those make great yard pots, already with holes, both the main body & the lid. Fun!

After seeing pics of staked plants taller than people, I knew a regular plastic hanging pot was never going to make an acceptable permanent home for Epiphyllum, and hanging that way, it demands way too much elbow room.

Does Epiphyllum like this? It must, here it now lives. I assembled this contraption last weekend, after wondering for months what kind of bigger, more permanent home this plant could have so it could get to look something like the inspirational ones - BIG and BLOOMING. It's part of a display rack wired to a wire basket lined with landscape fabric. I plan to never repot this.


These pieces were scattered around in various pots and looked SO much bigger before they were installed here. Plenty of room to grow I guess. :+)

Hi Tiffany, I don't cage my Epis too much like that, but some got tied on the handle. Sometimes it makes buds on majority of the nodes along the edges, so it might be too constricted as it grows in your cage and you would not want to lose the buds, since it takes quite a while to grow for that beautiful one day show:

Awesome buds! I could end up hating it, but it was one of those irresistible impulses.

"Somewhere" on this site was a great tip about tying rope/string around a pot to hang it -- not macrame, very simple, works on any pot with a rim. I lost the bookmark!! Anybody?

looked especially useful for small pottery or terra cotta containers that you can't easily poke holes into.

My own tip to add to this old thread is that I've used closet rods along the top of my windows... the resulting display is not unlike a valence and actually gives that bit of privacy we need in winter when the leaves are down.
