Hi all,
I am new to iris gardening. I've got around 100 or so iris (so far) on order for 2017 from vendors around the US. Many of those vendors have been reviewed as having huge rhizomes. My question is, should I be requesting *midsized* rhizomes based on my Western Minnesota location or do huge rhizomes have an equal opportunity to thrive in my weather conditions?
Thanks,
Traci
:thankyou: Crossing Fingers!

Hi Traci, and welcome to the iris forum. I don't think I would ask for a certain sized rhizome. In states where conditions are dryer throughout the year a vendors mature rhizomes will all be smaller than irises raised by vendors who either irrigate or have wetter weather. Those vendors will only have the fat rhizomes. All do well for me. Smiling

Welcome! I wouldn't worry too much about the rhizome size. After a couple of years in your garden they acclimatize to your conditions so the increases will size themselves to best survive in your area. Down here where it is humid and hot in the summer the increases don't stay fat, but become longer and thinner. I am sure it helps them dissipate the heat better, and makes them less prone to rot. In your area they may stay fat to retain heat. You will find out soon!

Welcome! ......I'll give you a typical male response...."size doesn't matter". As was stated, they will "seek their own level" after a season in your climate / growing conditions. The only issue, the very large "west coast" rhizomes, when planted late , in more northern climes, often have a tendency to "split open" during their first freeze.....sometimes it's wise to "mulch" with something *loose* (that won't pack down...like pine straw.or even pine boughs) AFTER the ground has frozen ...then remove the mulch in early spring.

Welcome!

You jumped in with both feet! Hurray!

If there's a local iris society chapter near you, check them out... even if you don't join, see if they have an annual rhizome sale!

Once I bid on a huge fat rhizome from Oregon at our member sale. Well, it did promptly rot in the middle (but did recover). Another time I bought a huge rhizome at our public sale and the same thing happened so size is not the best determiner of success in any area.
