I have a few old wire baskets (the hanging kind) and their coconut linings disenetegrated when I pulled them out of the garden shed. I know you can buy replacements but are there any alternatives that I don't have to spend money on? And still have it aesthetically pleasing? At a loss. And was really hoping to bring them to life this year.

Have any landscape fabric or window screen handy?

No landscaping fabric. Sad But the window screen is interesting. I have some metal screen. Maybe I can spray paint the screen a bright color?

Absolutely! Or add enough plants that you can't see the container at all!

I battled google images for ideas and came up with nothing until I saw one lined with cedar. So, I tried one. I think it turned out okay. And eventually it'll turn that golden orange. Smiling (lined it with plastic)
I have a few more to do and I'd like to try the screen for the next one. Maybe cut some holes on the outside to grow plants out of so it covers the whole thing like you suggested.
Right! Now I'm hopped up for some gardening!

That is pretty!

If you are really stuck-lining with a contractors garbage bag works.
Also sometimes you can place a shallow plastic pot in them.

These are not as pretty, but if you plant them so as to hide the pot---it works.

Update, after the cedar dried. Turned out pretty cool. And that krylon paint is tough. Thought the wandering Jews would spill over the sides though. Still pleased. (:

I like what you've done. I've given up on coir liners because the squirrels just take it for their nests.

There is a 'plastic' sheeting they sell at the garden center here. It is green plastic on one side with holes about every inch and the other is a furry green felt like stuff. It goes in the hanging basket furry side out. So stealing that idea, I would think that if the cuttings you used don't hold up and the soil starts to leak out, you could line with perforated plastic to add some strength.

I forgot to mention that part Lynne. Smiling I did line it with plastic. Big Grin Some garden plastic bags used for growing tomatos. Worked out pretty well. Nice aesthetics and no spillage. Holds moisture extremely well too.

I have been experimenting with a couple of row boxes high on a wall outside. Coir, soil, ssedums. Last trear I tried marigolds which didn't seem to take the dry, hotconditions well.Still seem to have similar issues though. And jow between squirrels and birds, about 20% is gone. Thought about using burlap coffee bags and a little plastic in bottom.
Always looking for interesting plants for pollinators and food! Bonus points for highly, and pleasantly scented plants.
