You have an important question, and I have heard it before from other gardeners.
Rule of thumb, I don't fertilize with any manure from an animal that is a meat eater. That manure can transmit parasites and infectious diseases.
I also never put "fresh" manure in my vegetable, perennial or annual garden; I always compost it for 6 months minimum. Chicken manure is pretty hot (potent) stuff, so composting would be a good thing.
If I am working acreage, I'll broadcast fresh steer manure in the fall, knowing I will be plowing and planting in June of the next year (the six month time-frame).
