Hi, I was rooting some unknown ground plants inside my house... then surprisingly some start to bloom (small flower) in a water container! Just wonder what kind of plant this is? and will they still root after the bloom?

Yes, can take root anytime, and keep blooming while doing it. Agree with the ID.

Looks like you live where this is hardy, in which case it might be a bit weedy for a ground cover, depending on what kind of barrier surrounds the area in question, and what purpose the area serves. It will creep indefinitely if hardy/happy. A little tall for foot traffic, and walking through it in bare feet or sandals could cause a rash on the feet of those unfortunately sensitive to getting a rash from Tradescantias (similar to poison ivy.) Some people report their pets are sensitive to Tradescantias as well.

Thanks, Deebie and Tiffany. Now it sounds interesting as called "White-Flowered Wandering Jew". I planned to root them and plant in an unused large planter outside while talking to neighbors about what plants I can grow in the planter... Now I learn a bit about this plant and wonder what if the draining of the planter/soil isn't "very excellent"? Will it be a no go? Think the answer could be "just try it and see!" But I do always hope all plants I grow have their happy days for long long time.

I'd say go for it. Being that you are in a drier climate, I agree with Tiffany. It should be less ruly. My mother in Charleston, SC 8b leaves a few short pieces in the ground over the winter and then creates hanging baskets and places other pieces in large pots for spillers in spring. This year, the ones in her pots did not die out over the winter. They were sheltered on her porch, though. Mine in the ground died back after being frozen, but are now coming back in force. I like the tri-color trandescantia better than the green. nodding Enjoy your plant! Thumbs up

Thanks, Tiffany & Deebie, for the info and encouragement. Now it's been in water for rooting for almost a week... since I placed them in an opaque container, can't see through the rooting progression! So how long it takes this small plant to root? I really don't want to pull them out from water to see if they root. Any idea?

What a gorgeous pot! Looks like it is in a sunny spot. If the sun is hitting it most of the day, I'll be very curious to see what this plant does in that environment. It never occurred to me to go beyond the shade with it. I'm still finding bits of it around, now some will get a reprieve from the compost bin for further experimentation.

??? First, Tiffany, why a gorgeous pot? I thought the Lucifer around the pot are ugly... hope the wandering jew would grow hanging down from the rim and cover those...

And then, isn't this plant the one loving full sun? Guess I was wrong... so far it's still mid spring and the plants in the pot seem enjoying the mild weather. I'll check daily (it's at a place near front door) to see if it needs moving to more shady area. Let me know if I miss something. Thanks

I think it's going to need lots of water in a clay pot sitting in full sun. Otherwise, the leaves may get that lackluster look, if not sunburn.

Fiat, I love clay pots & in particular, the urn shape of yours, but if those are Lucifer heads, I'm not into that. Sorry for the unwelcome compliment.

Your original post said you had harvested the plant from outside, so I assumed you found it in sun since it was given a pot in the sun. If the assumption was incorrect, my bad.

Hey, Tiffany. No bad on anything you said! I was just joking about the "Lucifer" face that even may not be the case... Now that I re-check the place I took the cuttings it was at side of a house wall -- shady area! So you were right but somehow I made wrong thinking that this plant love full sun... I'll carefully check the situation of the plants in the pot at that sunny spot. Thank you.

Cool. :+) it is in the shade that this plant is way too happy here. Sorry if I didn't speak clearly earlier.

So... twin experiments afoot, yours maybe trying in more shade & me experimenting in more sun. Fun times!
