I got a message from a guy in Puerto Rico who wants to do some trading of exotic tropical plants. He sent me a photo of what is says is a plumeria, and it thinks it is native to only a very small area of Puerto Rico. This looks like no plumeria I have ever seen, with its rounded leaves. The name of this species is Plumeria krugii Urb. He says some say it is the Plumeria obtuse but he thinks otherwise, saying that the flowers and leaf-form are different.

Does anyone know anything about this plant?

I'm far from a plumeria expert (I'm barely a plumeria novice), but it looks like Plumeria krugii is considered a synonym of P. obtusa. I know it's not too unusual for many wide spread plant species to have distinct regional variations, but still be part of the same species.

I did a search and found about the same thing - if you do a google image search on Plumeria Obtusa leaf, you will see someone made a photo of all the leaf shapes

The guy said that this particular plumeria is often called an obtusa but said that he was absolutely sure it was not one and the same. He says the plant that is found in a small area of PR is found nowhere else. The petals are narrow and pointed and don't overlap. The leaves are rounded and at least in the photo that he sent me, and that I posted, the leaves look like no plumeria I have ever seen. He also said that the fragrance is unlike that of the obstusa and is stronger.

Perhaps this is a variation of the obtusa. I just don't know.

Whatever it is, it's different and unique. Grow it and let us know how it does.

Thanks, @kbuntu. That's a nice photo. That is an odd name to say the least. I wonder if this is a "rubra" or something else. I have never had a plumeria that wasn't a rubra.

From what I have read, many of the "species" from Cuba, Puerto Rico & the Caribbean (including Plumeria krugii Urb.) are a now a synonym of Plumeria Obtusa (obtuse shaped leaves). There isn't a lot of info available though and I'm not an expert. The only reference is from the internet and without any sort of test or study of the specie you never know if this info is reliable.
