I agree the top one looks like a lupin. It's a little hard to make out but I'm thinking the shrub/tree has opposite palmately compound leaves so with that and the flowers I'm thinking a buckeye, Aesculus.

You must be in the California foothills. The white Lupin is a pretty rare sight - they are normally blue. The tree is a California Buckeye.
